Maybe they aren’t “Lazy”

A consideration of the ways we limit introverts.

I’m going to share something that feels fairly vulnerable with you.

I have spent most of my life feeling & believing that I am lazy, unmotivated, and deeply lacking in drive.

Why?

Short answer, it’s because that’s what I was told for most of my adolescence.
Sometimes directly, and more often indirectly.

Like every time an adult would remind me & my peers that,

“If you actually cared about succeeding, you would do x, y, & z thing”.

“If you really wanted to succeed, then you would be part of more clubs”.

“If you truly cared about being a successful adult, you would happily be a part of extracurriculars & after school activities”.

“If you honestly wanted to do something with your life, you’d be out doing more, instead of staying holed up in your room”.

Which on the flip side reads:

If you aren’t doing all of these things (which I wasn’t), then you don’t actually want to succeed or make something of your life.

In affect — you’re lazy. At least that’s how many people, self included, internalize this message.
